Quick Q&A: Wedding Wear

July 2, 2009

Q: @BrandiHeinz I need advice on wedding and rehearsal dresses that aren’t too much $ – everything is skanky or juvenile!

A: Luckily, with the economy in such a poor state, it isn’t too hard to find a nice dress for less. I have gathered some dresses under $150 and thrown in some tips!

Things to look for:

  • Patterns, Ruffles, Florals
  • Appropriate Lengths
  • Strapless, interesting necklines or single shouldered dresses
  • Day to night versatility- some of these dresses could work for both the rehearsal dinner and the wedding- not that you’d wear it for both, but weddings do tend to be day to night affairs and knowing you CAN wear it again is great!

These first two dresses were on Nordstrom.com. Nordstrom has an excellent “Dress Shop” with easy search functionality that allows you to find a dress for your shape, the right occasion, or by price, etc. The first is a Suzi Chin for Maggie Boutique single shouldered dress. It is definitely a statement dress, but if you dress it up with some nice earrings and a not-too-tall heel, it won’t be too outrageous.

The Little Black Dress! The go to dress for every “what do I wear?” occasion. This Calvin Klein dress is classic and on-trend with its sheer lace overlay. This particular dress also has a sexy cut out back. You WILL want to wear it again!

Playful but Pretty

These trendy dresses would be perfect for the rehearsal dinner (unless the brides parents are reallly uptight)! The colorful dresses send out a cheerful tone and the black and white tunic can be dressed up with colorful but classy accessories (no cheap plastic bangles)!

Lingerie Done Right- Not Done Repetitively

June 12, 2009

While I do love Victoria’s Secret and other mass marketed lingerie brands, sometimes I want something more unique. There is just something about wearing a cute/sexy/flirty bra that makes the day brighter- even if you are the only one who knows you are wearing it! These are some of my favorite brands (sans-VS):

Honeydew Intimates

Honeydew Intimates Anchor Set

Honeydew Intimates Anchor Set

I recently discovered Honeydew Intimates– a line of pretty intimate apparel with a flirty and sexy twist. The newest collection for spring and summer includes bright colors, girly prints, and great selection of cuts and styles! From polka dot thongs with cute bra-strap adjustable sides to ruffly boy shorts, there is a fit for every girl. My favorite set this season is the anchor boy short and bralet set, shown to the right. After realizing the great prices, the next thing I realized when I first tried Honeydew Intimates was the comfortable and luxuriously soft fabrics! Even wearing the g-string, I felt like I had nothing on. Honeydew Intimates has a bunch of cami sets as well- which I may be investing in soon considering my new obsession. Check them out on honeydewintimates.com!

Natori BUkhara Robe

Natori

My Natori robe is my favorite thing to get ready in- it’s super soft and light weight and the cut is flattering, unlike a big fat bath robe. Natori is a bit more expensive, but they are definitely quality products with a great sex appeal. Natori has all sorts of intimate apparel and even different collections (including the great robe pictured), and they can all be found here.

Figleaves.com is a great place to buy a variety of intimate brands. But did you know Figleaves has its own brand, as well? And they recently expanded their offerings into a clothing line! I still haven’t ordered any of their great new dresses, but they are worth taking a look. The bra pictured to the right is the Trellis Embroidered Bra by Figleaves.

Business Casual Turns Business Fashionable

April 17, 2009

I’ve worked in offices with professional attire, business attire, and business casual dress codes. By far the most atrocious attire is business casual.

For some reason, crossing the line from “business” to “business casual,” generally means going from business appropriate to “i just woke up and picked up whatever was on the floor.” I don’t care what the actual dress code is for a business casual environment, if it says “casual,” people tend to forget the “business” part and dress however they like until management sees too many t-shirts or witnesses one too many muffin tops

Of course these assumptions don’t apply to everyone. But regardless, Business Casual Must Turn Business Fashionable. Keep reading to find some Spring 2009 work wardrobe items:

Dresses are so versatile that they are an absolute necessity in a work wardrobe. Adding a simple cardigan to a night-on the town dress can modify a dress so it is work appropriate. The following are some highly versatile dresses I found for just that kind of occasion.

Vera Wang Fall Preview 2009

March 6, 2009
On Thursday, February 26th, Vera Wang had a preview of her Fall line at her garment district show room. The collection was mostly made up of black and greys, with just a few bursts of green, blue, and gold. What made the line distinct was its use of texture and unique fabrics- including neoprene, otherwise known as scuba diving wet suit material. Lots of ruffles, crinkled fabrics, ribbons, and sequins made the ordinary pieces extraordinary pieces. Out of everything in the show room, I enjoyed the accessories the most; big costume gems on earrings and necklaces, fur stoles, sequined scarfs, and big bustier-like waist belts. These are pictures from the preview:

Paris Spring Couture 2009

January 28, 2009

Spring is in full swing in Paris and the runways are full of beautiful couture designs! Chanel was showing black and white designs with plenty of lace, sequins, and a tripping model. Armani Privé added in some color, florals and metallics and Christian Dior exhibited all of the above plus voluminous skirts and details inside and out. Trend alert: Head pieces, florals, and structured jackets paired with skirts were shown all around.  Black, white, a mix of metallics and a few bright colors made the cut.

Fashion Week 2008- Dresses

September 9, 2008

Dresses Dresses Every- WEAR!

The weekend brought in some of the top designers and more spring trends. Dresses overshadowed shorts, pants and skirts in almost every collection. Starting from left to right:

*Words in bold are trends that were seen in shows throughout the weekend and Monday

Abaete showed a blue and white oragami-inspired dress with a contrasting colored waist and the look was worn with navy tights.

Rock & Republic presented a one-shoulder ruffled top dress in black.

Donna Karan sent her thick eyebrowed models down the runway in polka dots and patterned dresses.

Tracy Reese is bringing this fall’s lace trend into Spring 2009 with a delecate nude and black dress.

Peter Som‘s magenta and orange, sweetheart neck, bustier dress would be perfect for a day at the racetracks next spring!

Max Azria for Herve Leger dresses were updated versions of his “bandage” dresses. Still form fitting, but with thinner straps and metallic colors like this silver one.

Diane Von Furstenburg’s collection was full of pattern dresses and flowing hair pieces in oranges and reds.

Fashion Week- Spring Style 2009

September 6, 2008

New York’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week kicked off yesterday with big names like BCBGMAXAZRIA, Perry Ellis and Nicole Miller. So far, it looks like spring is going to be all about interesting necklines, grecian-inspired flowing fabrics, and an interesting mix of black, grey, purple and orange palettes. Mini and Maxi dresses were shown in most of the shows with strappy sandals in every color. Below are some of my favorites from the first day of Fashion Week:

BCBG Max Azria styled a one strap dress over a striped shirt dress, creating a feminine but casual look with yellow gladiator heels.

Above left, Michael Angel used a beautiful pattern of greys, black and purple to create this sweeping dress. Nicole Miller created the patterned dress on the right that hugs the lines of the body a little more than Micheal Angel’s Dress. Flowing styles like these have already been seen by multiple designers during the first day of fashion week.

BCBG Max Azria also showed this red, draped mini dress. The bottom is similar to some of the styles he has shown in his Herve Leger lines.

Fashion Week continues through next Friday so check back for more great highlights!

The Ultimate Vacation Accessory

July 14, 2008

So… I had never bought anything at a mall kiosk… until last weekend. I found a dress that can be worn a trillion different ways and can be worn casually or more formally. The dress is 100% silk, so it can be rolled up into a ball and placed in your suitcase and still come out read-to-wear. The style is brazilian-inspired and all of the prints are unique, so no one can buy the same exact one. There is also a shorter dress in the same style as well as many different styles on the website. I paid $100 for the long style and prices only go down from there for shorter ones. Worth every cent, but I doubt I will change my general perception of mall kiosks.

I’m going to start posting a “Designer Deal of the Week” and this Alexander McQueen Alexander McQueen Diamond DressMcQ “Diamond” dress is the first to get the title.
Diamond Dress- Back
Everyone needs a little black dress and the details and fit of this dress make it stand out more than a plain black sheath dress. I found it at ShopBop, they are having a pretty big summer sale right now and you should check it out for other great deals.

A Dark Cloud Comes Over Our Closets

April 30, 2008

I have gladly worn dresses the last 3 summer seasons. Form flattering, fun, and comfortable, dresses are a great way to show off femininity and a great pair of heels. Unfortunately, the fashion gods have officially declared their doom. According to the fashion editors, stylists, and designers who make and create trend forecasts, dresses will officially drop off of the style radar by the end of August. The styles that will be replacing the dresses are going to be more tailored with wide leg pants, and a continuance of the high waist on bottoms. One of my favorite outfits I have seen in this style was by Ralph Lauren. This look was created for his 40th anniversary line. While most of us will not be wearing this tuxedo-like style, this outfit emphasizes the feel of fall fashion. If you just aren’t ready to let go and are still looking for a dress to wear this spring or summer, go for small floral prints.
