Makeup in a New York Minute

March 9, 2009

Every day on my morning commute I see a handful of girls applying their makeup on the train and subways. Most of the time, these girls have a little cosmetics bag full of her different necessities: mascara, eyeliner, lip gloss, bronzer, foundation, etc. I would love to be able to wait to do my makeup during my commute, but the thought of throwing my $40 bronzer or powder into a flimsy little bag and risking it breaking into pieces makes me nervous. I was figured somebody already come up with a solution to this problem, so I checked out Sephora looking for a single compact with everything you need in one. This is what I came up with:

Tarte Spring Greening Palette

Tarte’s Spring Greening Reusable Straw Palette

For those of you who only need to use eye shadows and lip gloss. Lucky you! Tarte has combined some beautiful colors, both natural and bright, into one little case.

London Fashion Week Wrap Up

March 3, 2009

Fashion Week moved through London to Milan since I last wrote. London fashion week was not as bright as New York Fashion week, but the lack of color did not mean lack of innovation. The London designers showed more daring print combinations and carried a darker feel. Here are a few main takeaways from the week.

Vivienne Westwood Red Label

Vivienne Westwood Red Label

Vivienne Westwood Red Label
Stripes, solids, and florals, oh my!

Vivienne Westwood was actually one of the more “colorful” collections at London Fashion week. With reds, yellows, blues and plaids of all colors, her collection was eclectic and modern. The models were either wearing deep lip colors of reds and purples or went all natural with a nude lip. There wasn’t anything consistent between looks- not even the shoes (which is common), which ranged from rubber “wellies” to suede pumps, thigh high boots and satin heels. Stay tuned- Vivienne Westwood convinced her campaign model, Pamela Anderson, to walk in her Paris show later this month!

Nicole Farhi
The Exception to socks with sandals…

Besides her starting pieces of chameleon-like skirts, dresses, and jackets, Nicole Fahri used a very muted palette of greys, blacks, and purples. The show was beautifully executed with a variety of textures and fabrics- fur, lace, sequins and metallic details. Most models accessorized with calf-high socks with pumps or open-toed sandals. While this would make me cringe in any real-life setting, this is the kind of bold move that separates European fashion weeks from New York fashion week; (and of course, the models’ pencil thin legs somehow made this look seem normal). Models wore elegant waves and slicked back styles in their hair along with bold, red and plum lip colors. Florals and lace came down the runway a few times, along with big satin bows and long leather gloves.

Issa
What is black and white and red all over?

Issa had a gorgeous, bold collection with black and white prints- stripes, flowing graphics, polka dots; and a few bright colors- red, orange, and blue. Hair styles were long and flowing down or pulled into a tight side bun with blushed cheeks and pink lips for makeup. Models wore thick platform heels in red and black and carried large decorative clutches of all colors and fabrics including feathers and polka dots.

Jaeger London
Neutral Geometry

With horizontal stripes, solids and polka dots in black, white and beige, the Jaeger show had a very consistent feel. Fur and lace textures, tights, and pointed pumps created a classic and luxurious style. One of Kate Moss’ favorite brands, Jaeger is great contemporary line and this collection is just another reason why. Check out the sale that they have right now on their website and pick out a dress that can transfer from spring to fall for less-than-designer prices!

NYC Spring Fashion Week 2009- From Poser to Posen

February 20, 2009

Apologies for falling off the radar for a few days! This fashion week has been crazy- I went from ardently following every NYC fashion blog/magazine/website which covers the shows to sitting in the 4th row at Zac Posen earlier tonight!

I have to be honest- the first weekend of fashion week was disappointing. I was looking forward to the Barbie 50th Anniversary Runway Show for weeks! With all of the big designers behind the designs, I thought it would be an incredible show. Instead, I was taken aback by atrocities like the following:

Barbie Runway Show 2009

American Runway Barbie?

Martian Runway Barbie?

I know that there are a lot of different Barbies that could have influenced the designers, but I felt that some of the designers took their creative license too far out of the box. (And since when or why would Barbie wear sequins and feathers on her eyebrows?) There were still a handful of great pieces in the collection, but the following look was my favorite:

Moving on, BCBGMAXAZRIA is one of my favorite designers. His collection on Friday Feb. 13th showcased a palette made up of greys, blacks, and deep blue colors. While there was a lot of interesting drapery and cuts, there is no other way to summarize the looks- plain jane. Although I must at least say I was intrigued by these gold metallic tights and this one shoulder dress:

On Tuesday evening, I attended the TIBI fashion show. I never used to follow TIBI, but after seeing her (Amy Smilovic– head designer) latest collection- I will be keeping a close eye on in the future. With beautiful silk dresses, plenty of black leggings, great makeup, and inspiration from a mix of decades- the show was contemporary and upbeat despite many other designers falling into the “I designed for the economic times” category. Amy used a great mix of textures ranging from silk to lace and fur, plus a wide range of colors- bright blues, purples, and extravagant prints with greens, golds and blacks. The following styles were some of the best on the runway that night:

The silk dress stole the show. They flowed beautifully down the catwalk in both prints and solids. The prints seemed to have an Asian theme of dragons and florals, while the solid colors included mustard yellow and bright pink. The finale dress (seen below) was absolutely gorgeous from every direction- due to the low back and the single shoulder design. And finally, to address what you may be wondering regarding shoulder designs (like the structured ones above)… Yes- I do think structured shoulders will be in style again. No- I do not believe any one in their right mind will begin to wear “shoulder pads” again. But structure and design are very important for fall, just like every other season- so I am sure this fall you will see toned-down versions of the runway looks (including some shoulder structuring) in stores.

There was even a gold Michelle Obama-esque dress (and jacket) which seemed very similar to her Inauguration Day Outfit:

Tonight I was in standing room at the Zac Posen show and was offered a seat right before the show began- in the 4th row!! Needless to say- the show and the collection were memorable. The atmosphere was a buzz- this was one of the biggest shows of the week. Paparazzi flashed pictures of Nicole Richie, Joy Bryant and others before the event planners cleared the runway. The show began with 5 model-looking pianists dressed in Posen walking out along the runway to their respective pianos (which were lined up down the middle of the runway!) The lights dimmed briefly and as the pianists began to play spotlights shone down directly above them. After beginning a beautiful collaborative piece, the models began strutting down the runway in gorgeous gowns, suits and jackets. The fabrics were luxe- silk, satin, lace and sequins, as could only be expected from Posen. The details were so intricate- they echoed couture, and a mixed palette of burnt oranges, golds, silver, and even bright purples and red came through. The crowd was mesmerized by the musicians (The 5 Browns– siblings!) and the Manolo’s (all shoes worn were Manolo for Zac Posen). Here are a few shots I took tonight:

These are some of the best looks that Posen showcased. I loved the sequin-detailed tights, purple satin dress with an exposed patterned lining, and the modern, greco-inspired gold gown:

More Paris Couture 2009

February 7, 2009

Many other designers have sent looks down the runway during Paris Couture Fashion Week since I last wrote about it– but Elie Saab and Valentino were standouts… The following looks were some of my favorites:

Paris Couture 2009

Layered ruffles, lace, white and silver were prominent in many of the collections this year- so you should stock up before the season even begins! My next post will be able to help you find affordable options that are still high-style. Because some of us just can’t afford everything we want…

Because I Said So is Back

October 20, 2008

As some of you may know, I recently made a move to the fashion capital of the world. I have been spending so much time looking for a job and spending time in the city, that my blog posting frequency has suffered! Sorry to my readers who have been checking back and not finding updates- I will be doing my best to write more often again!

Spring Fashion 2008: Taste the Rainbow

January 20, 2008

Oscar De La Renta Spring 2008If you didn’t jump onto the trend of bright yellows towards the end of this summer, you have another chance coming up. Spring fashions have hit the ground running and just about the only color that wasn’t used repeatedly was black. Reds, oranges, every shade of green, bright blues, and even greys were spotted repeatedly flashing down spring preview runways.

The spring 2008 ready-to-wear pictures were part of a style.com lookbook

The red dress is a Zac Posen design and the white blouse with sky blue skirt is by Oscar De La Renta. Both are from spring 2008 ready-to-wear collections. Note the silver shoes and simple slicked back hair styles on both models. Silver sandals and other silver accessories will be especially functional with the colorful season ahead. Simplicity and toned down beauty were also prominent on the runway, allowing the clothes to make the colorful statements this spring.

November 20, 2007

Another night of “paper writing” was spent sitting around my tv with my laptop and a word document with the cursor just blinking at me to write something… anything!

intervention

Intervention (on A&E) is really an hour killer, and however depressing the show is, I always want to watch the entire thing. I saw the end of what looked like a really good episode, “really good” actually being really bad and extra juicy. Try: Bulimic & over exercising mother turns her heroine addict and anorexic daughter in to the Intervention team only to be sent to a rehabilitation clinic as well. Yes please! I only saw the last few minutes, and fortunately for the unfortunate family, it was a happy ending. Speaking of family, I hope my dad Tivo’d that for me.

Also, InStyle now has this brand new “shopping section” on their website, and the dresses section alone had about 1900 different options (not exaggerating), includingReiss Dress dresses in my price range- shocker! I’m still hoping to get something flashy and cute like the dress to the right for New Years, but I’m not in love with any dress in particular yet. You can check it out at… http://www.instyle.com/instyle/products/0,,,00.html

But be careful, you might not get your work done and therefore be doing it over your lunch hour tomorrow, like me. I’m going to go to bed since I will be on a coffee caffeine-high all day in order to get everything done before I head home for Thanksgiving Break! There will be plenty of thanks to be giving after I get tomorrow over with… and Christmas wish lists to be made!

Hiya!

November 20, 2007

Hiya! That’s a British greeting I picked up from my cousin in England last spring. I just wanted to have a little intro post so readers can get to know what I’m about. I have this intense hatred for crocs, which I will divulge into further this week, and I can thank Crocs for being my inspiration for writing a blog. I like expressing my opinions about fashion, trends, and new products. I might love them, hate them, or just leave them, but now the blog world will know, too! Stay tuned for my first real posts, coming soon..!
