Makeup in a New York Minute

March 9, 2009

Every day on my morning commute I see a handful of girls applying their makeup on the train and subways. Most of the time, these girls have a little cosmetics bag full of her different necessities: mascara, eyeliner, lip gloss, bronzer, foundation, etc. I would love to be able to wait to do my makeup during my commute, but the thought of throwing my $40 bronzer or powder into a flimsy little bag and risking it breaking into pieces makes me nervous. I was figured somebody already come up with a solution to this problem, so I checked out Sephora looking for a single compact with everything you need in one. This is what I came up with:

Marky Ramone for Tommy Hilfiger… never would have thought

March 6, 2009

The scene was electric last night at Tommy Hilfiger’s Denim store in Soho where Paper Magazine was throwing a launch party for the Marky Ramone Rock Scene Collection. Yes- Marky Ramone of the Ramones- the punk rock group from the 80s.

Apparently Tommy and Marky go way back to when Tommy’s brother, Andy, played in a band with Marky. The seemingly odd duo teamed up to create a new “fresh” line of jeans and leather jackets. The timing couldn’t be better, seeing as we have been seeing a lot of 80s throwback trends on the runway during all of the fashion weeks this season- shoulder details, bright blue eye shadows,  etc.

Dressed in punk, prep, classic, and every style in between, guests lined up around the makeshift, but fully functional, “bar” which is usually the cash wrap. Tommy himself was hanging out in the back corner as Marky and his band performed live for the crowd. Somewhere in the midst of it all, I am sure the collection was hanging around some rack, but it just didn’t seem to be the focal point of the evening! At the end of the night, Tommy exited promptly at 10pm with his entourage and guests started receiving their goody bags. The Tommy Denim gift bags were filled with Tommy’s “Dreaming” perfume, drum sticks, a Paper Magazine issue, a condom/STD safety kit from Marky Ramone (what?), and a $25 off coupon for when you spend $100 @ TH Denim.

Here are some pictures from the event:

Vera Wang Fall Preview 2009

March 6, 2009
On Thursday, February 26th, Vera Wang had a preview of her Fall line at her garment district show room. The collection was mostly made up of black and greys, with just a few bursts of green, blue, and gold. What made the line distinct was its use of texture and unique fabrics- including neoprene, otherwise known as scuba diving wet suit material. Lots of ruffles, crinkled fabrics, ribbons, and sequins made the ordinary pieces extraordinary pieces. Out of everything in the show room, I enjoyed the accessories the most; big costume gems on earrings and necklaces, fur stoles, sequined scarfs, and big bustier-like waist belts. These are pictures from the preview:

London Fashion Week Wrap Up

March 3, 2009

Fashion Week moved through London to Milan since I last wrote. London fashion week was not as bright as New York Fashion week, but the lack of color did not mean lack of innovation. The London designers showed more daring print combinations and carried a darker feel. Here are a few main takeaways from the week.

Vivienne Westwood Red Label

Vivienne Westwood Red Label
Stripes, solids, and florals, oh my!

Vivienne Westwood was actually one of the more “colorful” collections at London Fashion week. With reds, yellows, blues and plaids of all colors, her collection was eclectic and modern. The models were either wearing deep lip colors of reds and purples or went all natural with a nude lip. There wasn’t anything consistent between looks- not even the shoes (which is common), which ranged from rubber “wellies” to suede pumps, thigh high boots and satin heels. Stay tuned- Vivienne Westwood convinced her campaign model, Pamela Anderson, to walk in her Paris show later this month!

Nicole Farhi
The Exception to socks with sandals…

Besides her starting pieces of chameleon-like skirts, dresses, and jackets, Nicole Fahri used a very muted palette of greys, blacks, and purples. The show was beautifully executed with a variety of textures and fabrics- fur, lace, sequins and metallic details. Most models accessorized with calf-high socks with pumps or open-toed sandals. While this would make me cringe in any real-life setting, this is the kind of bold move that separates European fashion weeks from New York fashion week; (and of course, the models’ pencil thin legs somehow made this look seem normal). Models wore elegant waves and slicked back styles in their hair along with bold, red and plum lip colors. Florals and lace came down the runway a few times, along with big satin bows and long leather gloves.

Issa
What is black and white and red all over?

Issa had a gorgeous, bold collection with black and white prints- stripes, flowing graphics, polka dots; and a few bright colors- red, orange, and blue. Hair styles were long and flowing down or pulled into a tight side bun with blushed cheeks and pink lips for makeup. Models wore thick platform heels in red and black and carried large decorative clutches of all colors and fabrics including feathers and polka dots.

Jaeger Fall 2009

Jaeger Fall 2009

Jaeger London
Neutral Geometry

With horizontal stripes, solids and polka dots in black, white and beige, the Jaeger show had a very consistent feel. Fur and lace textures, tights, and pointed pumps created a classic and luxurious style. One of Kate Moss’ favorite brands, Jaeger is great contemporary line and this collection is just another reason why. Check out the sale that they have right now on their website and pick out a dress that can transfer from spring to fall for less-than-designer prices!
